Homily – 22nd Sunday OT – September 3, 2017

Can you imagine? One moment, Jesus is saying you’re “the rock on which I will build my church” and the next moment he’s calling you “a stumbling block.” That’s not just great word play – from cornerstone to stumbling block – but such an abrupt change had to be incredibly painful for Peter to hear. Can you imagine?

I am a racist!   I’m sorry this homily isn’t starting out with a funny story about a talking dog or a dog that walks on water.  Every fiber of my being wants to recant what I just said and say “I’m just kidding,” but the evil fact is that it is true – I am a racist.   I make snap judgments about people without getting to know them first; I lump people into general categories that doesn’t honor them as individuals. He yelled as one of the ducks fell from the sky.

What is the purpose of Religion in our society?

If you type that question into Google, in 0.67 seconds you will have 120,000,000 responses.  Some of the responses are positive and uplifting about the purpose of religion, but it seems that more of the responses have a cynical bent to them, claiming that Religion builds barrier instead of bridges, sows division instead of good seeds, and exacts burdens instead of alleviating them.

Description

Homily – 17th Sunday OT – July 30, 2017

A man and his dog were walking along a peaceful country lane.   It was a beautiful day, the birds were singing, the light breeze carried the sweet smell of the summer wild flowers, the sky was a magnificent blue and the sun was warm and gentle.  Everything was right with the world when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.
